Updated: Mar 16, 2023

Overview

In light of the ensuing music festivals and the highly anticipated music soon to release this fall, there has been much discourse on what Cadence is and how we should define it. It has been in our experience that Cadence is composed of three parts. Cadence is the Vitality, Inflection, and Delivery of vocals.

The Energy Dynamic

Vitality, one of the more dynamic components, gives the song “life.” Usually tied to the composer's personality, it allows the composer to dictate the nature of a song. From the vitality, we may understand more about the composer’s background, events that lead to the song's composition, and in some cases, the composer's essence. Vitality establishes the core foundation of Cadence.

Connection With Inflection

Subsequently, as we institute the foundation of Cadence in vitality. The composer may then reveal the genuine emotion behind the song's contents through inflection. Inflection may be the loudness or softness of the composer’s words, thus giving us a better understanding of the overall sentiment. To further comprehension, a phrase exclaimed with more bravado gives a better context of the confidence radiating from the composer’s selection of words. Inflection builds upon vitality to connect composer emotion to composer essence.

Time To Deliver

Accordingly, delivery works like a well-functioning supply chain getting the right product to the consumer. By which the composer delivers their words based on two reasons. Furthermore, one reason a composer may deliver their words in the manner they do would be to invoke emotion, be it intentional or not. Secondly, the arrangement of their words may connect to the intended poetic code. It should be noted that the region of origin plays a significant role in the dialect used. From the delivery, the consumer may put the song in a tangible meaning. Thus, attachments are made as a result of composer delivery.

Takeaways

Ultimately the combing forces of Vitality, Inflection, and Delivery produce what we define as cadence. As investigated, Cadence plays a significant role in connecting the composer to the listener. As a good rule of thumb, think about what the composer may be conveying and how they uniquely choose to do so in regards to their cadence
